St
Maarten Shopping
|
|
With its rich cultural
diversity, St Maarten/St. Martin may seem
like a mini-United Nations. St.
Maarten shopping is an experience
in itself. Shopping in St Maarten is an
integral part of St Maarten tourism. That's
not surprising, considering that the island
is part of two different countries: for
more than 300 years, France and the Netherlands
have shared the island, which is why it's
known as both Saint Martin and St Maarten
(St Maarten Netherlands Antilles).
With attractions like St. Maarten carnival and St. Maarten
weddings, shopping is a passion with tourists. Shoppers never feel alone
in St. Maarten/St. Martin. At scores of stores in Dutch Philipsburg and
French Marigot, you're certain to run into a crowd of old friends. You
know their names, you love their stuff. And in St. Maarten,
it's more affordable than you ever imagined.
If you are planning a St Maarten wedding then you need not bring anything
except yourself. Prices are lower on the island than you're likely to
find back home. If you need the money to shop then there are St
Martin casinos nearby where you can win a jackpot. In this
duty-free port, price tags do not include government-imposed taxes on
imported foreign luxury items. That means you can slash anywhere from
15 percent to 40 percent off the price of watches, rings, cameras, fine
china and a host of other gotta-haves.
Say hello to Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, Minolta and other old friends in
the camera departments of electronics stores. Maybe it never occurred
to you to purchase a camera or video recorder in the Caribbean, but
remember that in duty-free St. Maarten you're going to pay less for high-end
electronics. The same goes for audio and video equipment such as VCRs
and DVD players, even brand-name computers, laptops and notebooks.

Treasure
Trove
|
Bling
is another bargain on St. Maarten/St.
Martin-and
there's an awful lot of it, from glittering
necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants
to custom creations and loose gemstones.
Gold, silver, emeralds, rubies, opals and
amber gleam from window display cases.
Or perhaps you're in the mood for something
a little out of the ordinary, such as tanzanite,
Tahitian pearls, or colored gems, including
canary diamonds and pink sapphires. Cartier
and Tiffany & Co. are just two of the
brands you know you can count on for quality.
Also be sure to visit Shiva's Gold & Gems and Trident Jewelers, which
purchase diamonds in volume from Israel and Amsterdam at savings that
are passed on to customers. Here you'll find a wide range of certified
diamonds in all shapes and sizes. Members of the "Leading Jewelers
of the World," the boutiques operate with the Alwani family's guarantee
of quality and artisanship.
Quality also is the watchword at Little Switzerland, started in 1954
by a Swiss family living on St. Thomas. Now stores are in 24 locations
throughout the Caribbean and Alaska. Tiffany, perhaps the world's best-known
jewelry store, purchased Little Switzerland in 2002. You'll find gold,
jewelry and gemstones, all with superb quality.

Watch
and Wear
|
Ever
feel like time is running out? Not on St.
Maarten/St. Martin. How about a watch from
Michel Herbelin, Movado, Raymond Weil,
Wittnauer, Maurice Lacroix or Locman?
Or bring home a truly unique timepiece from Primero Platini. Elini's
NAZAR watch keeps perfect time and may even improve your luck! With its
unique concave shape and meticulously detailed dials, NAZAR watches sport
dials that feature horseshoes, shamrocks and other symbols traditionally
employed to ward off evil. You'll thank your lucky stars for this fashionable
Swiss-made creation.

Dressing
Up
|
But
don't just dress up your wrist. Dress up
your table, too. Island stores carry a
wide range of fine linens, from tablecloths
to placemats and napkins, some made by
hand, and others turned out by small, family-owned
factories in Europe. You'll also find a
world of dinnerware — German cutlery,
French pans, Italian crockery — as
well as the finest silver and stemware.
Trust the names you know: Wedgwood, Rosenthal,
Waterford, Christofle.
Pick up a beautiful linen tablecloth at Linen Galore. Durability characterizes
this luxurious fabric once found only in royal households. Fashioned
from the combed fibers of the flax plant, linen is a natural, light fabric
that can be handed down from generation to generation.
Top fashion designers as well hold court on the island, especially in
Euro-chic Marigot. Be on the lookout for a plethora of top men's fashion
brands, including names like Lacoste, which also offers great styles
for women and children. Don't forget Maui Jim sunglasses, Sperry shoes,
Slam sportswear, and swimwear from Gideon Oberson and Gottex. And the
fashion show just wouldn't be the same without Gucci and Prada.
At MCM, leather lovers will think they've died and gone to heaven. The
store, at Simpson Bay (Where Aqualina Beach Club is situated), features
designer purses, bags, and fine leather accessories.

Island
Flavors
|
After
all that shopping, you'll no doubt be craving
a little pick-me-up. St. Maarten/St.
Martin boasts several gourmet stores that are
packed with name-brand delights, including
Petrossian caviar and hundreds of world-class
wines. Just call out their well-known names
and they'll appear: Montrachet, Yquem,
Dom Perignon, Latour, Haut Brion, Mouton
Rothschild, Chateau Petrus. Don't "wine" about
the prices. They're lower than in the United
States. And don't overlook the rums. After
all, you're in the Caribbean, where rum
is king. Pyrat XO Reserve rum is an American
Tasting Awards Gold Medal winner. Nine
unique barrel-aged create this incredible
dark-amber blend, offering flavors of vanilla,
caramel, honey, and cinnamon.
The Dutch and the French are famous for their cheeses, and you'll find
the best varieties on St. Maarten/St. Martin. Dutch names to remember
include Edam, Gouda, and Old Amsterdam; from France come brie, camembert
and hundreds of other mouthwatering varieties.
Ready for something sweet? Holland and France also rule the luscious
world of chocolates. Dutch brands you'll find on the island include Droste
and Verkade, and you won't go wrong with French Valrhona. Also pick up
some Caribbean specialties, such as Mango Tango cookies, Captain Rhum
caramels, and the island's signature guavaberry liqueur.
A completely new shopping experience awaits you at St. Maarten.
